Costa Rica borders both the Caribbean Sea
to the east and the North Pacific Ocean to the
west, with a total of 802 miles of coastline.
It borders Nicaragua to the north and Panama
to the south-southeast and, in total, comprises
19,730 square miles of land and 227,470 square
miles of territorial waters.
One of the most stable countries in Latin
America, Costa Rica is referred to as the "Switzerland
of the Americas." It is an active member
of the United Nations and the Organization of
American States, and is the seat of the Inter-American
Court of Human Rights, the United Nations University
of Peace and many other international organizations
related to human rights and democracy.
Home to a rich variety of plants and animals,
over 25% of Costa Rica
is composed of protected forests and reserves,
featuring an abundance
of wildlife. National parks
are home to a variety of monkeys, large cats
and tapirs, many species
of turtles and hundreds
of types of birds.
